The Obvious and Hidden Dangers

RSI is known by various names. It can be called CTD (Cumulative Trauma Disorder), OOS (Ocupational Overuse Syndrome), or WRULD (Work Related Upper Limb Disorder). RSI is simply a condition resulting from the overuse of a tool, eg. computer, mouse, knife, guitar, etc. or any activity that requires frequent repetitive movements. It is a condition that affects muscles, tendons and nerves in the hands, arms and upper back. RSI generally occurs when muscles are kept tense for prolonged periods of time due to poor posture and/or repetitive motions.

Warning Signs

RSI conditions have many varied symptoms. Any of the following might indicate the onset of an RSI.

  • Recurring pain or soreness in the neck, shoulders, upper back, wrists or hand
  • Tingling, numbness, coldness or loss of sensation
  • Loss of grip strength, loack of endurance or weakness in hands or wrists
  • Muscles in the arms and shoulders feel hard and wiry when palpated
  • Pain or numbness while lying in bed. Often early stage RSI sufferers mistakenly think they are lying on their arms in an awkward position and cutting off circulation, so the onset of RSI is often times overlooked.

RSI Information

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most well known type of Repetivie Stress Injury.

Most of these disorders are interrelated, so a typical person usually suffers from many at once

Studies have related RSI and other upper extremity complaints with psychological and social factors. A large amount of psychological distress showed doubled risk of reported RSI symptoms, while job demands, poor support from colleagues and work dissatisfaction showed an increase in pain even after short term exposure.
